As it was, the rest of the day proved fruitless except for one small matter. Craig and Barry had spotted Hansonâs car heading out of the city. The time on the ANPR showed that heâd taken off the second Tina Sawyer had opened her front door to Sara and Carla.
âHe didnât hang around getting out of town, did he?â Sara mumbled, more to herself than anyone on her team.
She punched herself in the thigh and immediately caught Carla shaking her head. She mouthed an apology, and her partner accepted it.
âOkay, Iâm calling it a day. Itâs gone seven now. We havenât found another sighting of him yet. The ANPRs will be doing their job throughout the evening, so thereâs no reason for us to stick around any longer, agreed?â
They all nodded, and most of them seemed defeated by the dayâs miserable outcome.
âGuys, donât take this home with you. Weâve done our best. Weâre stretched at this moment, working the two cases, so as my good partner over here is fond of saying, âDonât beat yourself up over thisâ. Iâm sure itâll come right in the end. Letâs remain positive at all times. Negativity is never good for the soul, remember that. Now go home and get some rest, and weâll pick up where we left off in the morning.â
Sara perched on the desk by the door and smiled and said farewell to each of them as they passed.
âEnjoy the rest of your evening, boss,â Jill replied, the slightest of smiles touching her lips.
Sara reached out and laid a hand on her forearm. âYou, too, love. Chin up. Weâll get the bastard.â
Carla remained behind with Sara. The first words out of her mouth were, âI hope youâre going to listen to your own advice.â
Sara smiled. âYep, Iâm not going to give this case another thought for the rest of the evening.â
Inclining her head, Carla tutted. âYeah, Iâll believe that when I see it. I mean it, you need to let it go this evening. Have a good nightâs sleep, and weâll hit the investigation and any possible leads that come in overnight hard first thing. Come on, we should both call it a day. I know Iâm knackered, physically and mentally.â
âYou go on ahead. I want to make a final call first and then, I promise, Iâll get on the road.â
âYou can ring Lorraine en route,â Carla said with a smirk.
âYou think you can read me like a book, donât ya?â
âYep.â Carla snatched her bag off the back of her seat and headed towards the door. âSend her my regards. See you in the morning. Oh, and be careful what you tell her.â
âI will. See you.â
Sara gave in, switched off the rest of the lights in the office and headed out of the door. In the car, she dialled Lorraineâs mobile. It went to voicemail, so she left a message. âHi, just checking in on you. Give me a call if you can later.â
She ended the call and settled into her drive home, listening to her favourite love song compilation.
